Some chilled out beach pop to start the week off. Silver Sound Explosion's washed out reverb instantly has me drawing connections to two of my very favorites, Slow Loris and Beach Fossils. A very good track. Stream some more tracks over at their Soundcloud, and keep up with them on Facebook.
A fresh new mix from Alaska's wonder-duo Solar Bears. This time mixing KSiA's always cool "Running out of You". A very minimal track, but still a great listen.
Don't forget to pick up Solar Bear's She Was Coloured In here.
The Los Angeles trio's recent track "Sincerely Yours" made it's way to my inbox today... Some very cool lo-fi indie rock. Grungy vocal paired with melodic guitar set this one apart from the crowd.
Keep it up. Pick up some more Knight Stalker jingles over here.
I hate everything, pessimism is my life right now. School is bogus, the people in the school can grow up and get real. I am also tired of all this space period shit. Come the fuck on. Okay, my rant is over. I do not hate Daniela and Ben Spector though, this is actually really awesome music! Daniela has recently release her Debut in Hebrew and Ben has been working as a sound engineer and playing with his synths. These two live together and vwala! You have your creation. This music is a great mix of acoustic folk and ambient electronica, which seems to be exactly what I am looking for lately. Daniela's voice is mesmerizing, I love girl vocalists, its my Achilles heal when it comes to music. The acoustic guitar with pop and crackle electricz make this really cool and I would say the best example is in the track "Mother and Sun." Anywho, this stuff is sweet, and Israeli so that's bad ass in it's own. You can pick up Daniela & Ben Spector's "Love is" over at their Band camp for 25 ILS (Israeli Shekel) I don't know the conversion rate to US dollars, but frankly I don't care either. Peace.
Magic Man, an indie act with plenty of character. Magic Man is givin' me goose bumps. I really like this stuff. The drums are encompassed in static and the synthesizer is bright as a bulb. The vocals are reminiscent of Annuals, its almost ridiculous how the harmonies and stanzas are so similar. The drums are electric and vibrant, I would love to here this without the almost hip-hop like beats to see if it could be made even cooler. Annuals uses two drummers and I feel like Magic Man could benefit from that as well. The drums are cool but I would love them to be acoustic, but that is just my preference. I have listened to three tracks of "Real Life Color" and each has been pretty damn good. I would definitely advise you to go check out Magic Man over at theier Band Camp where you can download their release for free.
Thomas Giles, the solo project of Prog Metal masterminds Between The Buried And Me's Tommy Rogers is soon to be released on Metal Blade Records, and I am sooo damn stoked! If you have any idea who BTBAM are you know that they don't fuck around when it comes to writing brilliant compositions. You can expect the same from the great front man's upcoming release. The track "Hypoxia" is streaming over at the Metal blade website and you can listen to it here. I really don't want to describe this song for you, first reason is because I am tired and have school tomorrow. Secondly, if you don't like this well, tits or get the fuck out.
Bronze's fresh EP is out now... "Sunnny Day" has an almost spoken word feeling to it, very early Modest Mouse. A great track by the former Detachment Kit gang + 2. Download the full EP at their bandcamp fo freeee. Listen up, and keep up. Very, very cool.
Some mellow surf rock picked up over from Wet Years' Bandcamp. Appropriately named after a beach in San Diego, "No Surf"'s woozy ambient guitar backed with distanced vocals resonating gets you completely lost, but still keeps up the pace to finish out at around three minutes. Beautifully put together track. I hope to hear more from them soon.
Gardens & Villa is a four part ensemble from Santa Barbara, CA, and have recently released a 7" on Cool Summer. Black Hills / Orange Blossom was recorded in the studio with Richard Swift and the Garden Boys, and has turned out as nothing short of a masterpiece. Side A's "Black Hills" is a combination of electronic grooves, folk genius, all wrapped up in some wondrous vocals.
The B side has a very different sound to it. Very much electro-funk orientated, but still without loosing Chris' vocal presence. In all, a great 7" for Gardens & Villa. Grab it over at Cool Summer Records above.
I've had a flood of emails these past few days for some reason, so I've been spending a lot of time sifting through all of them. Quiet Loudly's very own Sal dropped in and gave me a heads up on their recent single "Be My Baby Mama" which appears on a summer 2010 compilation titled Brooklyn Heat. This shoegazer track's washed out guitar paired with Max's vocals is a great listen; I hope to hear more from these guys in the future. They will be playing a release show at Coco66 on Thursday, January 20 along side Gunfight! with the super-group moniker "Quiet Fight". If you're in the area, head on over!
Edelweiss found its way to my inbox sometimes last week (I have been super busy) along with various links and a short description of the group. Hailing from Stroudsburg PA, this duo kicks out some very dance-able indie space pop with their first maxi-single (NO) having been recorded in Threashhold studios over in NYC. The oldest of the group is 17 and the youngest 14, which I think speaks for itself when talking about the potential these guys have. "Fiasco" is a great track, reminding me instantly of Phoenix. Definitely one to watch out for. Download and support here.
Nathan Edwin is a singer/songwriter based out of Bloomington, IN I believe. Nathan plays soft folk/acoustic songs about his past and his regrets. His voice is very welcoming with a soft timbre and a very interesting twangy timbre on his longer notes. Nathan also has a little bit of ambiance on his tracks, which if you have been reading SOMETHING.civil you notice I love ambient music. Nathan Edwin has 10 releases dating back to 2006. Ten releases, all having a good amount of time on them, in five years. That's great, hats off to you Nathan. This is not something I would listen to everyday, but it is something I would jam to every now and again. I know Nathan's girlfriend and she sent a mass message about helping Nathan out because he has been at this a long time, he is a very talented guy and from what I have seen is very professional. You can pick up his music over at his Bandcamp, his music costs some muns, but it is always worth it to help a musician out.
I first heard about Listener from a group called The Chariot they used some of Listener's great poetry in their song called David De La Hoz. The Chariot is a bad ass Chaotic Hardcore band, so if you're into that kind of thing check it out. Listener's latest release "Wooden Heart" is great. I downloaded it and after the first track was finished I immediately got all four Listener records. "Talk - Music" is a genre created by Dan Smith of Listener and to be honest, it is intense. This raw poetry being yelled in your ear with the ambient indie tune going on in the background make for a great mix of emotions. I want to talk about the track "Most Roads Lead To Home" that left me saying "Wait, keep going your on to something!" I want you to listen to what Dan has to say and really think about what he means, this guy has got some very good things to say. Now this is another member of Listener and in no way would I want to leave him out in the credit for how unique this group is. Christin Nelson is responsible for the very well groomed wavy ambient indie tracks. Go purchase all of Listener's records over at their Bandcamp, I would say it's well worth the money. Oh, one last thing, I read somewhere that Dan Smith was once a rapper, I am yet to find anything musically on that. If I do you can guarantee it will be on SOMETHING.civil.
A little retro-pop to finish off the week. Leavers' Do EP is Doctrine's first release and is supposed to be out on Spiral Jetta sometime soon. With a heavy methodical bass line paired with the gentle "pathetic/romantic" guitar line, "You and Your Dad Issues" is an extremely captivating track that is the perfect combination of indie and that throwback retro-pop sound. Grab the other free track and/or buy their tape over at their bandcamp.
When it comes to post-rock The American Dollar always leave me wanting more. I just download the Compilation they are giving out for free for the holidays and I love it. It encompasses such a great variety of tones and colors. I am definitely digging the climaxes of these songs, the huge open synthesizer with the simple thin guitar sound give a good balance making it very enjoyable. I am a sucker for ambient stuff as well, and you can bet your money they have that on lock. Acoustic piano and strings are not shy either. The piano does great work under the guitar parts, being dissonant enough to not be the forefront but still being present enough to make an impact. The electronic crackles and pops bring a good new age feel to the music also. The American Dollar, like a lot of bands lately are doing a name your own price over at their Bandcamp. Definitely go pick up their music.
So I just happen to log onto Twitter (which I rarely do) and saw the always fresh, Blackbird Blackbird, had dropped a new remix a few hours ago. . I try not to creep, but it just happens... Download it here. Check it out down there. A very cool track, kudos.
The Deloreans, a four part ensemble hailing from Louisville, KY have such a retro sound that I can't stop listening. My ears must be deceiving me. Jeremy Perry has such a vocal range, and such a unique sound, it really sets these guys apart from anything I've heard. "Gatsby"s fifties-era vocals and synth lines backed by Meg's gentle cooing is such a treat.
Set to release American Craze via the DIY record label Jangle & Roar on January 15, these guys (and gal) are definitely ones to watch for. Pre-order it here.
Check out their bandcamp for another track that's freeeeee.
A pop gem I came across earlier today. Michael Parallax's Mountain is a great album in its entirety. Enjoying every track, keep it up. Download it for free here. Thanks, SpiritCat.
This folk gem from Galapaghost had me making instant connections to the folk giants such as Iron & Wine and a long time favorite of mine, Jose Gonzalez. "Never Heard Nothin'" is a truely mezmorizing track that left me clueless as to why I had youtube open... A very mellow album and highly recommended. Get it here.
Hailing from Denver, Force Publique's upbeat electro punk sound sets them apart from a lot of what I've been hearing these past few weeks. Very refreshing. There will be a string of free downloads to come according to their bandcamp. Can't wait.
Psyche Cycles was emailed to me in the midst of the holiday chaos and I just got around to listening to it today. The emailer, Mitch, half of the wonder duo known as Hear Hums, sent me praise for the site and a list of links that he thought I might find interesting. The album was released on Crash Symbols and is available on cassette along with digital links here. There's also a link to download the whole album for free if you really want, but as always, I encourage you to support the artists.
This visual/experimental/soundscape masterpiece has left me with a flood of reactions that are really hard to put in order, so bear with my ramblings. When Mitch mentioned that Psyche Cycles was an exploration into his own human psyche and the mood transitions it experiences, it really made me listen to the album with a new mindset. The rawness and harshness of tracks like "Placid Recoup" and the surreal tranquility of "Talluhlassip" remind me of the extremes we experience as humans, and that our moods are all predetermined by our previous experiences and how we reacted or the situation in which we experienced them, much like the whole album is listened to as almost a single track. The track before determines which directions the whole album is headed.
The sound spectrum across the album is enormous which fits perfectly in which the context of the album was written. Our human psyche is enormous, filled with everything you could possibly think of. There really is no limit to our mind if you think about it. There are only limits if you set goals.
In my Electronic Music class the Okester has been shoving this idea down our throat that we need to write about music objectively, to state the facts about the music. But music as an art is supposed to arouse emotions and induce mental stimulation, and there's nothing objective about that. Each listener has their own unique reactions to music, and I think we should be more interested in the uniqueness of the experience rather than the hard facts about the music; anyone can point those out. So I say write about music subjectively, and let us share our experiences with the class, Mr. Oke.
Here are my two favorite tracks from Psyche Cycles -
Mitch had mentioned that they enjoy the "hands on" aspect of their musical endeavors. Here's a video they created for the first two songs of the album, filmed and edited by the band. All original footage.
I saw True Grit today, it was really fuckin' cool. I would definitely say to go see it. So to be honest, I don't know how I feel about Giles, and so-called friends. First of all, I want to know what Giles' friends did to him to make him label them "so-called." I would also like to know if this girl in the picture is the one he is always singing about. But, on to the music. It's calm instrumentation and raw intense vocals remind me a lot of Bon Iver. The voice is really something different, I love weird out there vocals though. Anthony Green....
I am currently watching two young men play Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Lates.
